China has found a way to turn deserts into forests

Researchers from Chongqing Jiaotong University have created a paste that can turn sand into soil, which could be used to turn deserts into forests. They also used it to transform 200 hectares of desert into land rich with different types of crops. Their results were published on the journal Engineering.

Where does the water come from to do the initial watering and the continued watering of plants? Is the watering process sustainable? Is it going to be environmentally problematic down the road?

probably less problematic than having less land to grow food and more land taken away by sand – think Africa and what can happen using saline water filtered to grow there
